Have you ever lost your luggage? It’s a bummer, huh? Now when the uninterested baggage-claim attendant writes out her report and tells you “it’s not possible,” whip out your phone, roll your eyes, and show her what is possible.

Trakdot, a 3-inch-wide device, can be placed inside luggage to notify the owner of the bag's airport location.

No more lost bags! Slip this gadget into your luggage and stay informed about its location via text message, email or an app. Get notified when your suitcase arrives in your destination city, for example, or program TrakDot to alert you when it’s on the baggage carousel.

LAS VEGAS — The 2013 International CES kicked off here Sunday night with a traditional event called "CES Unveiled." Scores of entrepreneurs hope to make a mark with their new products at the massive consumer gadget trade show each year. Among the multitude of products shown on Sunday night were Trakdot, an app that tracks the location of your bags after a flight, and HAPIfork — a "smart fork" that helps you eat slowly, and therefore, presumably, less.

Have a look at the accompanying video to see what else caught our eye.

The card-sized Trakdot Luggage device will offer travelers the security of knowing exactly where their luggage is – even and especially when it’s nowhere near its intended destination – at any location where a cellphone signal is available. The system works when the Trakdot Luggage Tracker device is stored inside a checked bag, with the device sending out a signal reporting a city-specific location to any mobile, Apple, Android or SMS capable device around the world. Users can opt to receive real-time data via text message, email, or through a special TrakDot Luggage app.
The Tracker’s location is determined using a quad-band GSM chip and triangulation instead of GPS in order to preserve battery power. The device runs on a pair of AA batteries, supplied by the manufacturers on purchase. The Tracker can also recognize the speed in which in...

Why We Like It: From anywhere inside your bag, this small FAA-compliant and FCC-certified device continually monitors cell networks to determine its location. During the flight, it automatically goes to sleep. (Jealous?) When you land, it wakes and sends you (and others, if you like) a text and/or email to let you know where in the world it has been and (fingers crossed) now is. You can proactively track the device through the website or optional app, which will alert you when your luggage is within 30 feet of you. Each checked bag requires a separate device.

Lost luggage is a seemingly unavoidable inevitability for the frequent traveller. Millions of bags either get left behind, sent to the wrong city or simply disappear completely every year. GlobaTrac has created Trakdot Luggage to give the constant flyer a little more of a sense of security. The palm-sized plastic device slips discreetly into your duffle or suitcase and updates the owner on its location via an app, SMS, email or the Trakdot website. Sadly the apps are not live in Play or the iTunes app store, so we can't tell you much about their functionality, outside of some specialized alerts that are promised, like a notification when your bag hits the claim carrosel. On the site you can set up customized text and email notifications or view location pins via Google Maps.

Trakdot is like Find My iPhone for your luggage. The small black and orange box is preprogrammed with your phone numbers and dropped into a piece of checked luggage. If you arrive at an airport but your duffel doesn't, you can check its location online with the Trakdot app, or get its location sent to you via text message or e-mail.
The device transmits the location using a SIM card, so a few special features had to be worked in to make it FAA compliant. The Trakdot automatically goes into sleep mode when it hits 100 knots and wakes up when the plane is at the destination gate.If you're a frequent flier who has been wronged by incompetent airlines, you may find it a good investment to let you know if your bag is in Frankfurt when it's supposed to be in Rome.

GlobaTrac, based in Los Angeles, is at CES 2013 to show off Trakdot, a small, battery-powered device that sits in your suitcase and tracks your luggage -- whichever airport it might end up at. The device works using GSM -- the Federal Aviation Authority won't allow such devices to use GPS -- and sends messages directly to as many cell phones as you assign to it. So if you're flying to Paris, and your luggage flies to London, you'll get a message on your phone saying that's where your bag is. Still a pain, of course, but at least you'll know.

As for demand? That seems easy. Mayer Alexander, GlobaTrac's VP of sales for North America, rattled off some stats from the FAA: of the 140 million people who flew more than once last year, he said, 26 million lost their luggage -- or, more correctly, an airline lost their luggage. Which explains why...
